BOOK DESIGN [typesetting]
As with editing, a professional typeset offers another way for your text to stand out in the marketplace and make an impact on your readers, whether in print or as an ebook.

I mainly work on books from publishers or authors seeking to self-publish, but I can also help with other document types, e.g. CVs, reports, etc.
What is typesetting?

Typesetting involves the laying out of text/images for print and/or formatting as an ebook. This typically involves:

-
initial page design (see my portfolio for examples)
-
producing the print book layout as a PDF (for traditional or self-publishing) using industry-standard software InDesign
-
image layout (where necessary)
-
ebook production for Apple, Amazon, Kobo, etc. – perfectly matched to your print layout

Once final files are confirmed, I can also help with upload to retailers, physical printing, etc. (see here for more info).

Do you offer cover design?

I'm not a cover designer by trade but can work with authors to put together a simple photographic or text-based cover. For anything more complex, I can offer advice on where to find a designer (see here for more info).

How much does typesetting cost?

Typesetting rates typically start around £100 for ebooks and £150 for print, depending on format, word count and complexity. Please get in touch with a word count and text sample for an estimate. My standard terms are 50% deposit up front based on the estimate, with the balance paid within 7 days of delivery (publisher terms may vary).

Can't I do this myself?

Although there are a number of tools out there to help with book layout, and it's certainly possible to create something beautiful, a professional typeset takes away the stress of going it alone, using industry tips and tricks to make sure design is expertly balanced against readability and production cost.
